Sadly almost dead nowadays, the demoscene was pretty much any artist's dream during the infant years of this computer era. Creative people with any sort of skills in the fields of music, graphics or programming gathered to collaborate on audiovisual shows and trips, releasing them on big parties, bbs's and the web, competing with each other and trying to break new boundaries. At first primarily technically, the more the sceners matured the better the demos and intros became artistically as well. I'd claim that the demoscene was a community of some exceptional talent, and I loved being a part of it even though I hardly contributed with anything but crap. It was a great learning place though, something of a home of soulmates that deeply influenced me. Today many of the best artists work in the video game industry. Some pals from TBL founded DICE, Triton became Starbreeze, Future Crew is Remedy of Max Payne and Alan Wake fame and prolific scener Statix is also the creator of smash hit Little Big Planet. I still have many good friends from those days and have worked with several on other projects, especially in film. You can find some of these elites or lamers among my links.
If you're new to this and curious, I recommend trying a few of the Youtube links just to get a grip of what it's all about. I tend to prefer the more atmospheric pieces, just like with film and music.
